A good leader knows them self their audience. They know where there employees are coming from and understand how to motivate them. My perfect leader would be able to support and facilitate me being as efficient as possible because they would emphasize balance. It is important to realize that productivity and efficiency do not have a one-size-fits-all solution, and while it's more work to know your employees individually the results are typically worth it.
Every company has a portfolio of employees from different backgrounds and the key to eliciting efficiency is accepting that not everyone works in the same way and that as a leader you will need to adapt to different contexts and situations. In the Spreier article "Leadership Run Amok" it suggests that successful leaders embody all six different styles of leadership for application in appropriate contexts. In order to get the most from me as an employee a leader would outline expectations, give constructive feedback often, and foster and open environment of mutual respect and support. However, I think that both employees and leaders need to stop expecting perfection out of their counterpart and learn to be flexible.
